KANPUR: Tolani Shipping, which played consistently over the last six days, won the last segment of the Ashok Ruia Trophy finals against India representative team, Formidables, 44-27 IMPs to emerge victorious in the event with the final score reading 136-115 in the National bridge championships here on Tuesday. This is the second Ruia Trophy win for the Tolani team, having won earlier in 1984. For title-holder Formidables it was the sixth defeat in the finals as it took home the B.M. Malani Trophy. Uncharacteristic errorThe defining boards of the finals were Board Nos. 37 and 42 in the third segment and 61 and 63 in the last segment. On Board 37, Subhash Gupta (Formidables), arguably one of the best players in the country and a double international, made an uncharacteristic error in a vulnerable slam contract and gave away 17 IMPs. On Board 42, Arun Bapat (Tolani) made a dangerous end play, instead of a guess, and gained 12 IMPs for his team. One of the Formidables pair missed making another vulnerable small slam on Board 61 which Arun Bapat easily made and Board 63 saw a missed game by Venkataraman-Chokshi of Formidables, and the finals was all over. Two elimination rounds of the Mohan Sick Trophy for the board-a-match (BAM) event have been completed and 20 teams have advanced into the finals, where they will be joined the two Ruia Trophy finalists, to be played on Thursday. Maya Meera Sneha (170) from Group AB and Bimal Sicka (179) from CD are the leaders going into the final.
