Corrections and Clarifications

  • The text of a report “Chandrayaan-1 lands probe on Moon” (Early editions, November 15, 2008, page 1) said that the Moon Impact Probe (MIP) impacted the moon’s surface at a speed of 1.6 km per second, while the accompanying graphic (Source: ISRO) gave it as 1.6 km/min, which is incorrect.

The same report, which went with the heading “India leaves its footprints on Moon” (Later editions, November 15, 2008, page 1), said the probe put India in the elite club of Russia, the U.S., Japan and the European Space Agency, which have impacted probes on the Moon. The detail is right. China has not sent a probe to the moon.

  • A Delhi report “IAF officer killed in naxalite attack on copter” (November 15, 2008, page 1) said that according to the DGP, a volley of bullets hit the wings. A helicopter has rotor blades and not wings.

  • The first paragraph in a Lucknow report “Malegaon: ATS detains mahant” (November 13, 2008, page 1) was “The Anti-Terrorism Squad of Mumbai on Wednesday detained Dayanand Pandey alias Mahant Amritanand, the Peethadheeshwar of Sharda Sarvagya Peeth in Jammu, for his alleged involvement in the Malegaon blasts in September 2007.” It should have been “September 2008”.

  • The caption of the accompanying photograph in a report “Personal anecdotes and universal value of honesty” (Chennai city, November 18, 2008, page 2) incorrectly referred to Ms. Sudha Murty as the Infosys Chairperson. She is, as mentioned in the text, the Infosys Foundation Chairperson.
