Letters to the Editor
There has been enough condemnation of the group clash among students of Dr. Ambedkar Government Law College, Chennai, and the police failure to take action. Two aspects need to be mentioned. First, when all political parties are committed to eliminating caste differences among the people, how is it that casteism still dominates society and continues to be the cause of almost all social conflicts? Second, instead of condemning the police for not acting, we should ask ourselves why they were driven to inaction. Before punishing the students and the police personnel, let us understand that it is the system which is responsible for the prevailing culture that needs to be changed. N.R. Sathyamurty, Cuddalore The law college incident reminds me of the agitation by medical college students (though not so violent, it kicked up a lot of dust) when C.N. Annadurai was Chief Minister. He volunteered to meet the students to get a firsthand knowledge of the situation. When he entered the college, he signalled to his security personnel to halt at the gate. He was booed by the students who said they did not want to listen to him. He calmly told them: “you need not listen to me. Please allow me to listen to you so that I may try to redress your grievances …” By the time he left, the students had undergone a complete change of mind.Ramaswamy Krishnan, Fremont Campus violence and general indiscipline in most of the colleges across the country are mainly due to the falling moral standards. Politicians alone cannot be blamed for student indiscipline. In the West, students fund their higher studies from the money they earn and hence do not waste their time and energy on petty matters. If only students in India are made to work to pay for their college education, they will have no time to indulge in anti-social activities. Padmasani Rangarajan, Kitchener
