J&K elections

The photograph of voters queuing up outside a polling booth in Bandipore (“55 p.c. turnout in J&K polls,” Nov. 18) was refreshing. By turning out to vote in large numbers, the people of the State have sent a strong message to separatists that there can be no solution to the Kashmir issue outside the democratic set-up. The nation salutes the people who exercised their democratic right braving the boycott calls, the chilly weather and other odds. The great service rendered by poll officials and jawans in conducting the elections should be acknowledged at the appropriate level.

Salin Thomas,

Kottayam

The people of Jammu and Kashmir have reiterated their faith in democracy, which is definitely a good sign for national integrity and sovereignty.

Abhishek Kumar Roy,

Visakhapatnam

It was inspiring to read the tale of the six men who braved a hostile climate and inadequate infrastructure to hold the election at Ladakh’s smallest polling station in Thugsey Gompa (Nov. 18). The episode aptly conveys the spirit of India and its democracy. In a world obsessed with utilitarian values, it may seem unreasonable to send six election workers to an inhospitable constituency for just six voters. But our democracy accommodates and respects every voter. And the voter should respect democracy by participating in elections. All those who refrain due to the ‘inconvenience’ of voting should please take note. At a time when sleazy news has massively invaded our newspapers and television channels, it is indeed praiseworthy that The Hindu has published such an inspiring report.

Vineet Sahu,

Kanpur

The commitment of the six polling staff and the enthusiasm of the six registered voters in Thugsey Gompa are commendable. It is amazing that they completed the process of election braving temperatures of minus 20 degrees Celsius. It is officials and voters like them who keep our democracy alive and healthy, despite the political system and politicians.

V. Ramadas,

Chennai
