NEW ARRANGEMENT: Women police on duty at Goripalayam in Madurai.

MADURAI: Women police personnel would be deployed to regulate traffic at select intersections in the city, said Commissioner of Police K. Nandabalan here on Monday.

Speaking to reporters, he said that with more and more new residential colonies coming up, the vehicular population had increased substantially. Keeping this in mind, extension areas falling under Madurai City police jurisdiction had been identified.

Mr. Nandabalan said that the police were planning to install automatic traffic signals in a few more places soon. To prevent accidents and regulate traffic, 20 women police personnel were trained recently and they would function as traffic police. They would be deployed at Alagarkoil Road near Home Guards office junction, Lady Doak College bus stop, Government Rajaji Hospital entrance, Goripalayam bus stop, Aavin junction, West Masi Street at Arya Bhavan junction, East Masi Street at St. Mary’s school junction, South Marret Street, Kamarajar Salai-Kuruvikaran Salai junction and New Jail Road-MGR Statue junction.

The Commissioner further said that the policemen who were manning traffic in these junctions would henceforth be deployed at B.B. Kulam junction (under traffic umbrella), opposite Theekadhir office, IOC roundabout (PTR statue junction), Natham Road (Madurai SP office junction), Tiruparankundram Road (near Agrini residential complex), West Veli Street (near Regal Talkies), Thavittu Sandhai (near PTR coffee bar), Mahal Road bus stop to Vasan Hotel stretch, Bypass Road (near Tamil Nadu State Transport Corporation office), Gate Lock Road (moving) and Munichalai Road junction to Kuruvikaran Salai junction. Besides, mobile women police patrol would be deployed to regulate parking of vehicles on Nethaji Road, Town Hall Road, South Avani Moola Street and South Masi Street.

In yet another step towards preventing the number of fatal accidents in the city, the police would soon fix radium cats’ eye fixtures on major intersections, Mr. Nandabalan said and appealed to the motorists to extend cooperation.

With the Ayyappa pilgrimage season on, a large number of devotees would start arriving from different destinations to the city. The vehicles would be permitted to park at shopping complex bus stand near Periyar bus stand and on North Masi Street. Though the west entrance to Meenakshi temple had been opened to cater to the extra rush, security checks would continue.
