Integrated Central Act sought

Special Correspondent

For the welfare of agricultural workers

THANJAVUR: The Centre should bring an Integrated Central Act for the welfare of crores of agriculture labourers in the country, said S. Ramaiah, All India President of the All India Agriculture Workers Union here on Tuesday.

Ramaiah was at Thanjavur to attend the ‘Jatha’ taken by AIAWU as part of its sliver jubilee. AIAWU members have taken jathas from Erode in Tamil Nadu, Jalianwala Bagh in Punjab and Varanasi to culminate at Hyderabad on December 2.

Ramaiah and others have been taking part in the jatha from Erode which started on November 15 and arrived at Thanjavur on Tuesday.

He told presspersons that while the wages of agriculture labourers were coming down, prices of essential commodities were on the rise. Both, the Central and State governments were not taking steps to bring down the prices.

T. Sathu, former MLA from Kerala who took part in the jatha, said that Kerala people never said that they would not give water (Mullaperiyar) to Tamil Nadu. “Tamils and Keralites are like sons and daughters of the same mother. We will never say that we will not give water to Tamil Nadu. We only said that the hundred-year-old Mullaperiyar dam should be strengthened and then water can be stored to any height. If it is not strengthened lives of 50 lakh people will be in jeopardy,” Sathu said.

S. Thirunavukarasu, State general secretary of AIAWU, said that AIAWU has been working for social security and social justice for agriculture labourers for the past 25 years.

G. Veeraiyan, former MLA and State president of AIAWU, G. Mani, State treasurer and State committee members K. Pakkirismay, N. Muthusamy, S. Chandran , T. Ravindran and P. Vasanthamani were taking part in the jatha.
