Inspection: Minister for Highways M. P. Saminathan taking a final look at the Cotton Market where the Collectorate for Tirupur district is planned to be established on a temporary basis, in Tirupur.

Tirupur: The Special Officer, C. Samayamoorthy, has selected the buildings on the Cotton Market premises here for setting up the Collectorate temporarily for the new district.

Official sources said that the Collectorate would function from the makeshift location till a permanent complex was constructed.

Certificate

The location identified by the Special Officer would be ratified by the Government once the fitness certificate was accorded by the Public Works Department.

Mr. Samayamoorthy told The Hindu that a proposal had been forwarded requesting the PWD officials to carry out an assessment to find out whether the facilities inside the Cotton Market were feasible for the establishment of Collectorate.

The report was expected to be filed by the PWD within a week.

Once the decision of the site was validated, refurbishment works such as setting up of wooden partitions and painting would be carried out inside the building. “The cost of repair works will be estimated by the PWD,” Mr. Samayamoorthy said.

Mr. Samayamoorthy said that the extra space available at the Khadi Board office, situated a few kilometres away from Cotton Market would also be utilised to accommodate the Collectorate staff if elbow room on the Cotton Market premises was later found insufficient.

“About 40 district-level officers and 500 staff are expected to be posted at Tirupur Collectorate,” he added.

Minister for Highways M.P. Saminathan on Saturday carried out a final inspection at the Cotton Market just before the special officer selected the site.
