Spreading legal awareness on wheels

B.S. Ramesh

KSLSA will launch this unique concept in a few days

A bus has been procured to conduct court proceedings

BANGALORE: In just a few days, Karnataka will join Haryana in introducing the concept of mobile justice or justice or wheels to spread legal awareness in every nook and corner of the State under a programme chalked-out by the Karnataka State Legal Services Authority (KSLSA).

The authority under Chairmanship of High Court Judge V. Gopala Gowda and the High Court Legal Services Authority under Judge K.L. Manjunath have initiated a programme to “approach the masses”, particularly the poor and the needy, with the message of legal awareness and legal literacy.

Under the programme, the authority has procured a bus and refurbished to conduct court proceedings. Apart from attempting to solve small and petty cases, the mobile court will also help in promoting legal literacy.

The bus will have two drivers. The bus will be at the disposal of each district legal services authority, which will ensure that the “mobile court” visited all villages under its jurisdiction. This will help the poor and needy in getting justice. Many poor people living in villages cannot afford to come to the taluk or district courts. Besides, the “mobile court” can deal with small incidents and events that go unreported or unregistered by the police.

The “mobile court” will help the illiterate realise that they too can fight for their rights without spending much money. It is also likely to help the courts resolve small and petty cases which have been clogging the system and leading to pendency of cases.

This unique initiative will take shape when the KSLSA inaugurates a bus service to spread the message of Lok Adalats and legal education in all the villages of the State. This concept is part of the authority’s continuing endeavour to help economically poor litigants.

Apart from this programme, the authority has been successful in resolving a large number of cases and reaching settlement in motor vehicle and cheque bounce cases. It has earned accolades for its various programmes, including setting up of a 24-hour legal aid clinic at the Bangalore Mediation Centre.
