Man held for stealing jewellery after a chase

Special Correspondent

Udhagamandalam: A jewel thief created a flutter at Coonoor on Tuesday. The Deputy Superintendent of Police, Coonoor, Dharmaraj told The Hindu that a man posing as a customer had entered a jewellery shop on Mount Road and asked the salesmen to show him some items. While pretending to make up his mind, he suddenly grabbed jewellery including chains and rings weighing about 11 sovereigns and ran out of the shop.

With the shopkeeper raising an alarm people nearby had tried to stop him. However, the culprit managed to give them the slip and run into the market.

Meanwhile, the police joined the chase and blocked various exit points.

He was finally caught near the cash bazaar.

The thief was identified as Jinnah alias Jaleel (23) of Kandhal near Ooty and the stolen items recovered.

A case has been registered by the Coonoor town police. Meanwhile, steps were taken by the police in various places to warn jewellers about such criminals.
