PALANI: After conclusion of the seven-day ‘Surasamharam’ festival celebrations, Sri Dhandayuthapaniswamy Temple once again is overflowing with Sabarimala pilgrims from various parts of the country. Pilgrims have started thronging the hill temple. The temple administration has taken adequate measures to receive pilgrims. It has deputed additional staff on the hill temple, winch and rope car stations to regulate the crowd. High mast light was installed in the parking zone meant for private tourists’ buses behind the hill temple. Temple administration hoped that huge arrival of pilgrims would certainly enhance ‘hundi’ collection and sale of panchamritham and various dharshan tickets. Pilgrims would also be allowed to see the manufacturing process and packaging system of panchamritham in day time. Special arrangements have been made in this connection at the automated panchamritham production unit situated near the winch ground station. The automated unit was commissioned at a cost of Rs.1.43 crore, with a capacity to mix 500 kgs of panchamritham in 10 or 15 minutes. Even as the temple administration has two types of transport facilities – rope car facility and three winches – to carry pilgrims to the hill temple and back, reduction in number of cabins in rope car facility to just four from 20 following an accident in which four government officers were killed on the spot, would stagnate pilgrims at ground and hill stations during peak season. “We would be facing tough times in clearing the rush as number of pilgrims travelling in one trip had slashed down to just 16. At a time, 16 pilgrims could go up and another group of 16 would come down simultaneously,” said officials. Travel time had been cut sharply for the safety of pilgrims. Otherwise, pilgrims have to climb over 600 steps to reach the hill temple. Already, pilgrims have started thronging Sannadhi Streets, Giri Veedhis and Padha Vinayagar Temple.
