Increase in property tax opposed
Staff Reporter
Rollback decision: Shops remain closed in Pudukottai on Tuesday.
PUDUKOTTAI: The dawn-to-dusk ‘bandh’ called by traders of Pudukottai town protesting the ‘serious hike’ in property tax by the Municipality, passed off peacefully, on Tuesday. All shop-keepers, except medical shops and other similar emergency service traders, downed their shutters.
The Municipality had, through a resolution adopted about four months ago, had increased the property tax by 20 per cent and 80 per cent over the existing rates for the domestic and commercial establishments respectively.
Traders demanded a downward revision in the revised tax structure and submitted a petition to the Municipal authorities, which, however, was of no avail.
The Pudukottai District Chamber of Commerce, in consultation with other traders’ associations, called for the bandh on Tuesday.
The office-bearers of the Chamber said a delegation of traders would shortly meet the Commissioner for Municipal Administration in Chennai to impress upon the need for downward revision of the property tax for commercial establishments.
