Watery grave for two children

Staff Reporter

HYDERABAD: Reportedly dejected over financial problems, a woman jumped into a pond carrying her two daughters near Hafeezpet railway track in Miyapur on Monday.

While passersby rescued the woman, Rutu, 23, from the pond, her two children, Tabitha, 5, and Ribika, 2, drowned in the pond.

The mother was admitted to Kondapur Government hospital.

Doctors said her condition was out of danger.

Originally from Medak, Rutu and her husband, Dayakar, a petty vendor, lives in a hut near Gokul Flats in Miyapur.

Of late, Rutu appeared to be dejected and used to frequently tell her father that she was worried of bringing up her daughters with her husband’s meagre earnings, Miyapur Sub Inspector Khaja Mohinuddin told reporters.

After her husband left for work, Rutu stepped out of the house carrying her two children around 9.30 a.m. She walked up to the pond and jumped in it holding the two kids.

“Passersby noticed her drowning in the pond and ran to her rescue,” the SI said. While they could pull the woman out of the water, the two girls drowned.
