AITUC flays Centre for delay in legislation to protect workers

Special Correspondent

TIRUCHI: AITUC Construction Workers Union has criticised the Centre for the inordinate delay in enacting a comprehensive protection legislation to protect the interest of the unorganised sector workers.

Of the total workforce of the country, 90 per cent were unorganised sector workers. The Centre informed that the Union Cabinet had already taken a decision to enact the comprehensive legislation in the last session of Parliament.

But it has not taken any initiative for enacting the legislation which will provide legal and social protection to the unorganised workers. The Centre should come forward to enact the legislation by accepting the recommendations of the Parliament Standing Committee with immediate effect, a resolution adopted at the State committee meeting of the Union held here on Sunday said.

Another resolution said that the construction workers in the country were in penury and did not own huts. This was a social malady. The State Government should immediately construct houses for the construction workers who had registered their names with the Construction Workers Welfare Board on seniority basis.

The State Government had created lot of confusion in enrolling members in the Board and in sanctioning the benefits to its members. This has led to inordinate delay in the sanction of benefits. The State Government should convene a tripartite meeting to form guidelines for streamlining the procedures for enrolling members and for augmenting financial sources of the Board. Yet another resolution favoured a political solution for the Lankan Tamils issue. The attitude of Colombo in attempting to find a military solution was condemnable.

The State and the Centre should continue to exert pressure on the Mahinda Rajapaksa government for a ceasefire and protect the human rights of the Tamils.

Former MLA and Union State president N. Periasamy presided. State general secretary K. Ravi presented the report.
