With grand notes of fun-filled learning

Staff Reporter

CHENNAI: As 8-year-old Janice Jayanth had a good voice and wanted to become a singer, her father felt that she should be taught music, in an environment of fun, action and teamwork.

Crotchets N Quavers, a singing group for kids, had the answer for his quest. The choir, launched in the city on Saturday, has selected 51 children to be part of its team, including Janice.

“We held the auditions in August this year. After a screening process we have selected the children and started rehearsals,” said Jayanthi Kamalaratnam, Artistic Director of Crotchets N Quavers. The youngest in the group is four years old and the oldest a teenager.

In a fun-filled setting, children are taught the rudiments of music and have their voices trained and sing popular songs. “The session starts with a game. Then we have voice exercises and actions for the kids. At the end of each rehearsal children would have learnt something while having a whale of a time,” said Ms.Kamalaratnam.

Although the choir is a fledgling group, it has accomplished a lot within a short span of time. The launch of an audio CD of a single ‘All things bright and beautiful’ and invitations for the kids to sing at events in the city are significant achievements.
