Barcelona stays on top

MADRID: Lionel Messi and Seydou Keita scored second-half goals on Sunday to give Barcelona a 2-0 victory over Recreativo Huelva and open up a three-point lead atop the Spanish football league after its closest rivals all failed to win.

Meanwhile in the Italian Serie ‘A,’ AC Milan edged last-placed Chievo Verona 1-0 with a controversial penalty to remain within one point of leader Inter Milan. Barca’s Messi fired a left-footed shot into the top corner at the near post in the 51st minute after a set move from a free kick.

After coming on as a substitute, Keita tapped in Samuel Eto’o’s shot in the 86th to extend the Catalans’ unbeaten run to 16 games — including nine straight league wins.

Barcelona has 28 points. Villarreal is second after allowing an injury-time goal to earlier draw 2-2 at Malaga.
