Letters to the Editor
It is quite reassuring to know that the Prime Minister and the Finance Minister had anticipated and strategically prepared for the global financial slowdown (Nov. 17). They should clearly spell out the plans they have for creating employment. The IT sector is bearing the brunt of recession. Soon, we will have quite a few unemployed personnel seeking jobs. Already, the crisis has started taking its toll with young techies taking away their lives in the U.S. We do not want an echo in India as we have already seen many suicides in the agrarian sector. Nirmala Narayanan, Bangalore The heads of many developed states and many renowned economists now acknowledge that the policies of neo-liberalism have led to a severe economic crisis. The Manmohan Singh government should learn a lesson or two and give up its reform-oriented agenda, particularly when the people are reeling under the impact of price rise and inflation. The Cabinet’s decision to hike FDI in the insurance sector and banking reforms are retrograde moves in this hour of recession.V.V.K. Suresh, Guntur
