TIRUNELVELI: The Corporation, which has established the modern slaughterhouse at Melapalayam on an outlay of Rs. 50 lakh, has decided to administer the butchery through a qualified non-governmental organisation and hence, the local body has formulated stringent stipulations for managing it. As butchering of goats is going on wherever the butchers want, the corporation has constructed the modern slaughterhouse on the Melapalayam Market Road. After sensing that managing this facility directly by the corporation itself would be a cumbersome affair, it was recently decided to govern it through a NGO and certain terms and conditions have been formulated. According to the conditions, the NGO selected for administrating the slaughterhouse can butcher only goats from 5 a.m. to 12 Noon and from 3 p.m. to 6 p.m. and collect only Rs. 20 per animal. The receipts should be printed in advance and appropriate seal obtained from the local body. Fitness certificate mandatoryGetting ‘fitness certificate’ for the goats from the government veterinarian 24 hours before butchering is mandatory and the corporation’s seal should be obtained on the left thigh of the animal as it is being taken to the shops. Besides appointing experienced butchers in uniform, slaughterhouse should be maintained clean and tidy and incorporate better solid and liquid waste management system. Germicides should be used after end of the day’s work. A fresh coat of paint should be given once in three months and the expenditure will be borne by the NGO. No slaughtering should be carried out on the birth and death anniversaries of Mahatma Gandhi, Thiruvalluvar Day, Mahavir Jayanthi and death anniversary of Vadalur Ramalingam etc. Since the corporation is annually getting Rs. 1,60,225 towards giving the right for slaughtering in Tirunelveli, Thatchanallur and Melapalayam Zones, the civic body is likely to get more than this amount as it has established a modern slaughterhouse with huge investment. Tender call shortly“To identify the right NGO for administering the slaughterhouse, open tenders will be shortly called for and hence, it will become operational in near future,” a top corporation official said.
