SRIVILLIPUTTUR: The Hear Institute, a non-governmental institution in Mauritius, has evinced interest in collaborating with Kalasalingam University at Krishnankoil, near here, for promoting higher education among children with hearing impairment.

Kalasalingam University launched the first-ever engineering programme for children with speech and hearing impairment in the country in January last year. The six-year B. Tech. programme is meant for children who have passed Std. X.

“Students from southern States and as far away as Bihar and Meghalaya have joined this course. The management offers 100 per cent scholarship for 30 students and 50 per cent scholarship for another 30 out of the total intake of 90 students,” Vice-Chancellor C. Thangaraj said.

He said parents of one of the students admitted to the programme had informed the Association des Parents de Deficients Auditifs, which works with the Hear Institute. “The institute has sought our help in setting up a higher education institute in Mauritius to offer an engineering programme to the hearing impaired students,” Dr. Thangaraj said.
