TN scheme brings cheer to Guntur chilli merchants

GUNTUR: Tamil Nadu Chief Minister M. Karunanidhi’s recent populist welfare scheme introduced in that State brought good tidings for the Chilli merchants and farmers in Guntur.

The Tamil Nadu Government promised to supply chilly powder, coriander, turmeric and other ingredients for Rs.50, which brought an order of 5,000 tonnes of chillies to exporters in Guntur market.

Now the lowest grades of chillies are being sold at Rs. 2,000 a quintal, while they were offered for less than Rs.900 during the season. When the chilli bags got gutted the ruling price for good quality was Rs. 3,000 a quintal.

Roaring business

Whoever stored their stocks in the cold storages, are now able to sell ordinary varieties like 334, Guntur sannalu at Rs.5,000 a quintal, while the premium varieties like Teja and Wonder Hot were attracting Rs.7,500 to Rs. 8,000 per quintal, though only 10,000 to 18,000 bags were getting traded on the floor against Rs. one lakh a day during season.

“We already made commitments for supply to Tamil Nadu and waiting for the first consignment of 1,000 tonnes. Remaining quantities will also follow soon,” said the Guntur Chilli Merchants’ Association president, Kilaru Roshaiah. The prices were likely to go up further during next month and touch Rs.10,000 a quintal witnessed during 2007.
