Cyclone: farm sector bears the brunt

Kakinada: The district administration will submit a report on the loss caused by the cyclone, Khai Muk, to the State government in a couple of days when the agriculture, revenue and other departments concerned complete their field surveys on the extent of damages.

As of now, the total loss is estimated to be Rs. 15 crores with the agriculture sector being the worst hit.

The loss on account of the cutting off of the road between Kakinada and Uppada to an extent of five km was put at Rs. 4 crores.

Paddy crop in about 3,00,000 acres was damaged causing major loss to the farmers who were on the threshold of taking home their harvest. Initial estimate of this loss is Rs. 10 crores.

Nearly 600 houses were damaged throughout the district due to strong gales and erosion by the tidal waves of Bay of Bengal.

The displaced people will be sanctioned houses according to the eligibility conditions and compensation paid, according to Collector Gopalakrishna Dwivedi.

He stated in a press release that an area of 11 acres was identified at Uppada for construction of 500 houses under the Indiramma scheme to rehabilitate the families which face the constant threat of being swept away by the tidal waves, especially during cyclones.
