PUDUCHERRY: Children’s Day was celebrated with loads of entertainment, competitions, prizes and fun at several schools in Puducherry. In Sri Sankara Vidyalaya School, competitions such as rangoli, kolam, craft from waste, drawing, mehendi design, Ikebana were conducted for the students from pre KG to Standard XII. A three-day scientology workshop was organised for students of class IX and XI in which students were taught how to learn the subjects and effective application. Girls of the school won the zonal-level throw ball match and bagged trophies and certificates. Children’s day was celebrated with songs, dances and skits at Don Bosco Matriculation Higher Secondary School. Correspondent Fr. Vincent Durairaj, Fr. Peter Francis and members of the PTA took part. On the occasion, teachers entertained the students with a variety of programmes such as songs and dances. A tableau titled “Value Tree” was presented to emphasise the values of prayer, honesty, courtesy, duty, forgiveness, generosity, kindness and team work for the students. Achariya Bala Siksha Mandir conducted the Children’s Day celebrations by holding a Talent Hunt – 2008, an inter school competition in drawing, elocution, essay writing and yoga for different age groups. Around 400 students from Puducherry, Cuddalore and Villupuram took part. The competition was conducted in collaboration with Lions Club, Puducherry. Chief Mentor of Achariya Group of Educational Institutions J. Arawindhan and Rajalakshmi Selvagandhi of Lions Club were present. The prizes for the competition included laptop, cash prize, gold and silver coins. P. Nivedha of Standard VI of Achariya Bala Siksha Mandir won the first prize in the drawing competition and bagged a laptop and shield. Ashwin Kumar of class IV secured the first prize in yoga competition under 5 to 6 years boys category, while Samyuktha Iyer of Standard IV bagged the first prize in elocution under sub-juniors category. B. Haarika of class V came first in elocution under juniors category and received a cash prize of Rs.1,000 and Muskaan Jain of class II bagged the first prize in essay writing under sub-juniors category. ICICI Bank organised an inter school drawing competition in the school and Amritha R. Bhatt bagged the second prize and received a gift voucher worth Rs.1,500. The drawings of the participants have been at the bank on Mission Street. Achariya Siksha Mandir organised a dress competition for students of classes I and II. Puducherry Women’s Commission S. Kamalini took part in the programme. Nearly 150 children participated. Principal of the school R. Manivijayaraghavan was present. At Vidhya Niketan A.M. Jagadish of class V was selected as a winner in the drawing competition in a running train conducted by the Pondicherry State Artists Society. B. Vivita of class VII stood first in the Regional-level “Art from waste” competition conducted by the Education Department. J. Vasanth Kumar of class V has been selected for the All India SIP Abacus and Brain Gym competition and O. Harish of class VIII and Sanjay Srivastav of V have been selected to represent Puducherry in the National Badminton Championship to be conducted in Hyderabad from November 23. Similarly, S. Sadhana of class V and Bismi S. Maheem of IV took the sixth and eighth place in the GAE (G.K.) competitions conducted by the Rotary Club of Pondicherry. On Children’s Day, the children entertained teachers with a variety of programmes including skits in English and French, drama, songs, music recitals, mono-acts, Bharathanatyam recitals and karate. The students had directed, choreographed, designed their costumes and acted in the skits. The scripts were on deforestation, pollution and corporal punishment and drastic consequences. Students from I to IX of Alpha Matriculation Higher Secondary School collected a donation amount of Rs.40,000 for cancer patients towards the Cancer Aid Society on October 30 and handed over the amount to social worker N.K. Bhattacharya. Every year, the students collected money and donated to the Cancer Aid Society. Nearly 40 students received gold medal, silver medals and cups for collecting the amount. Students of Class I to V of the school collected Rs.12,000 and gave it for Aid Age India. The amount was handed over to Program Officer B. Prema and nearly 30 students received medals and mementos for collecting the amount. Principal V. Bashingam and Director B. Dhana Thiyagou appreciated the students for their efforts. A rolling trophy was presented by Rotary Club of Pondicherry-Cosmos to Petit Seminaire Higher Secondary School for bagging the second prize in quiz and GK test. School Principal Fr. M.S. John Bosco received the trophy from Collegiate Education Minister M.O.H.F. Shahjahan. In the quiz programme, R. Gurudharshan received a cash award of Rs.5,000 for securing the second position. A. V Joe Vimal Raj of class X and Avadh Vidhlani of class X emerged as third place winners and received Rs.1,500 each. In the higher secondary level, two students from class XII, Rahul Narandranath and Vijay Vigneshan received Rs.1,000 each. The school presented 28 science projects this year and out of this six projects were selected for the State-level. In the finals, a project on “Nitrate estimation in ground water in urban Puducherry,” prepared by Mugil, Satishkumar, Harish and Calvin of class VII was adjudged the first in junior-level. The project would be presented at the National-level project seminar to be held at Nagaland on December 26. P. A. Vincent Raj, Albert Jaclin and J.K. Sivakumar were guides for the students. The principal congratulated the winning team. At the Children’s Day celebrations, Fr. M.A. Gnanapragasam of Hospital Ministry of Health Commission, Archdiocese of Pondicherry and Cuddalore distributed prizes to the students of the high school who emerged winners in various talent search competitions. Fr. Roche, Parish Priest of Oupalam took part in the celebrations at the primary school. A drama was staged on the occasion. Prize winners of quiz competitions and science project presentations were honoured by the principal. Our Special Correspondent from Vellore writes: Shiksha Kendra Ideal and Matriculation Higher Secondary Schools, Pallikonda celebrated Children’s Day. G. Thirunavukkarasu, Principal, ICSE School advised the children to become ideal citizens. Children were entertained by the teachers through various programmes from nursery rhymes to dance. High achievers in quarterly examination were honoured by the school chairman T.N. Rajendran. J. Suhasini, Principal of the Shiksha Kendra Matriculation HSS conveyed her wishes to all. Sweets sponsored by Sunfeast Products were distributed to the students. J. Vishnu proposed a vote of thanks. The school students participated and won many prizes in the various events in the Vellore District-level Sports Meet held at Voorhees Higher Secondary School, Vellore recently. N. Ganesh (Std.XI) won the second prize in shuttle badminton, while J. Kishan (Std.VII) won the second place in chess, and C. Bharath (Std.VIII) won the third place in 100-m running. Mr. Rajendran, Mrs. Suhasini, Mr. Thirunavukkarasu and the school teachers appreciated the winners and wished them well in the divisional-level sports meet.
