TEST OF KNOWLEDGE: Kadavallur Anyonyam, a contest for Vedic scholars, in progress at the Kadavallur Sree Rama Temple near Thrissur. Thrissur: A seminar held at the Kadavallur Sree Rama Temple here on Monday as part of Kadavallur Anyonyam, a contest for Vedic scholars, called for extensive research into the philosophy of sound and phonetic theories mentioned in Vedas. Delivering a lecture on ‘Philosophy of sound and phonetic theories in Shiksa and Pratisakhya’, Bhagayalatha Pataskar, director of the Pune-based Vaidika Samshodhana Mandala, said that Vedic seers understood sound as an all-pervading principle. “Ancient Indian philosophy of sound traces the journey of sound from a physical perishable entity to a subtle entity and to an imperishable entity. Vedas, and not contemporary Sanskrit language, serve as the linguistic basis of all philosphical findings about sound,” she said. Vedas and philosophySaritha Maheswaran and Usha Devi spoke on ‘Vedas and Saiva philosophy’ and ‘Vedas and Uttara Meemamsa’ respectively. The topics to be discussed in the coming days include ‘Vedic roots of Advaita philosophy’, ‘Vedas and Nyaya Vaiseshika philosophy’, ‘Glimpses of bhakti in Rig Veda’, ‘Vedas and Purva Meemamsa philosophy’, ‘Vedas and Sankhya Yoga philosophy’, ‘Worship of Nature-Vedic and non-Vedic concepts’, ‘Philosophy of Vyakarana -- Vedic and non-Vedic concepts’, ‘Women in Vedas and philosophical systems’ and ’Non-Vedic trends in Buddhism and Jainism’. The cultural programmes to be presented include vocal recital by Arun Kumar, guitar concert by Jayan Varma, concert of Kathakali padams by Kottakkal Madhu and Vengeri Narayanan, flute recital by Kudamaloor Janardhanan, veena concert by Anand Kaushik and staging of the Kathakali play, ‘Uttara Swayamvaram’. The Anyonyam will conclude on November 25.
