Swantons lifts Pooja title

KOCHI: Junior Kerala player Jigar D. Shah hit an unbeaten century (111, 103b, 2x6, 16x4) and Sreejith took four wickets as Pattara Swantons CC, Kochi, defeated Chennai’s Parry Sports and Recreation Club by six wickets and won the 58th Maruti Homes Pooja all-India cricket tournament at the Tripunithura Palace Oval on Sunday.

It was Swantons’ maiden victory in the event, one of the oldest limited-over cricket tournaments in the world.

Parry, batting first, was in deep trouble at 88 for seven before Bhaskar helped the side to a decent total with an entertaining century (102, 51b, 11x6, 5x4). In the end, the effort was not enough.

T. K. Madhav, former Kerala and Tamil Nadu Ranji star, gave away the prizes.

The scores: Parry SRC, Chennai 226 in 37 overs (Bhaskar 102, Sreejith four for 36) lost to Pattara Swantons, Kochi 227 for four in 36 overs (Jigar D. Shah 111 n.o., Gaujith 42).

Special prizes: Jigar D. Shah (Swantons, man of the match), Bhaskar (Parry SRC, most entertaining century), Ajay Kudua (Swantons, best batsman), Sreejith (Swantons, best bowler), N.K. Arjun (Globstar Telecom, most promising youngster), Ajith (Oktopals, best allrounder), M.S. Akhil (Globstar, best fielder). — Principal Correspondent
