BANGALORE: A Bangalore family is walking all the way to Tirupati for a good cause. With the objective of creating awareness on the needs of differently-abled children, the Nuhatch Foundation, in association, with the Rotary Bangalore Orchids organised the walkathon from Tumkur Road in Bangalore to Tirumala in Tirupathi. S.R. Rao Sahib, Ann Lalitha Rao Sahib and their son Shashank S. Rao Sahib are undertaking this walkathon over a period of seven days. The 284-km journey was flagged off by differently-abled children from Aruna Chetana, a school for them at Narasipura near Nelamangala. The former Indian wicketkeeper, Syed Kirmani, and Rotary District Governor U.B. Bhat were present. SolidarityThe children walked the first kilometre along with the Rao Sahib family, to show their solidarity to the cause. Corporates, individuals and the general public have come forward to contribute to the cause of such children by donating Rs. 2,000 for every kilometre covered. On the whole, the walkathon aims at collecting Rs. 6 lakh that will be used to fund “Dharithree,” a residential block for the differently-abled at Aruna Chetana. As promoters of the event, the Rotary Bangalore Orchards has contributed Rs. 50,000 towards this venture. Positively opposing the felling of trees along the national highways, Mr. Rao Sahib, along with his wife and son, have claimed that they will plant saplings at Hoskote, Kolar, Mulabagal, Chittoor and other stages of the walkathon en route to the centre of pilgrimage.
