Karan and Mahesh rescue Railways

NEW DELHI: Karan Sharma and Mahesh Rawat saved Railways from acute embarrassment with a 146-run partnership on the opening day of the Ranji Trophy super league match at the Karnail Singh Stadium here on Sunday.

Karan (79) and Rawat (67) pulled Railways from a depressing 45 for five to 224 all out with Baroda finishing the day at one for no loss.

Early moisture made a mockery of Railways’ decision to bat first and soon the home team was regretting the move. Salim Veragi stuck to a tight stump-to-stump line and Irfan Pathan kept up a stifling length to reduce Railways to 45 for five. Amit Pagnis fell to a sizzling catch at short-leg when Azharuddin Bilakhia held the firmly flicked ball.

Baroda, however, met with some spirited resistance from Karan (199b, 12x4) and Rawat (141b, 8x4, 1x6), but Railways failed to make the most of their effort. The innings caved in once Rawat departed.

Irfan Pathan was the pick of the bowlers. “It always helps when you play first-class cricket. I have been enjoying my bowling,” said Pathan on his four-wicket effort.
