Deepthamsh Reddy outplays Girish Koushik

Arvind Aaron

Chennai: Deepthamsh Reddy of Andhra Pradesh outplayed former World under-10 champion Girish Koushik of Karnataka to figure among the six leaders on full four points at the end of the fourth round in the VIT National under-13 chess championship at Vellore on Sunday.

Anurag Mhamal, N. Rajkumar, Karma Pandya, Fenil Shah and Chandrasish Majumdar are alongside Deepthamsh on four points.

Among the girls, top seed J. Saranya shares the lead with J. Vaishnavi, Anjana Krishna, B. Pratyusha and Agnihotri Ghosh.

Jinx continues

The higher seeds continued to fall at the top board, in VIT University’s Anna Auditorium.

Deepthamsh used one key central square for his bishop and later used that square for his knights to control the game and win a rook in a 53-move defeat of Girish.

Bengal’s Chandrasish snapped the links for Anchit Vyas’ rook on the 25th move to win material and the game. Tamil Nadu’s Rajkumar surprised Utkal Ranjan Sahoo in a long 79-move encounter with black pieces displaying sound middle-game and end-game skills.

Gujarat’s Karma won pawns at will early to down Karnataka’s Viani D’Cunha in 45 moves.

World under-12 bronze medallist Pratyusha won a knight following a rare miscalculation from reigning National under-11 champion Srija Seshadri to win in 32 moves.

Seven rounds remain to be played.
