PRIZE SCALP: Ravikant Shukla edges one to Arun Karthik, who makes no mistake, off P. Amarnath. GHAZIABAD: Tamil Nadu pacers tormented the Uttar Pradesh batsmen to gain the upper hand on the opening day of the Ranji Trophy Super League match at the Jawahar Lal Nehru Cricket Stadium here on Sunday. Nothing went right for Uttar Pradesh which took the field without regular captain Mohammad Kaif — down with fever — and key performer Praveen Kumar, who is nursing a sprained ankle. Uttar Pradesh, led by Piyush Chawla, was asked by Dinesh Karthik to bat first. Openers Tanmay Srivastava and Shivakant Shukla showed patience and grit to gather 39 runs before first-change bowler C. Ganapathy had Srivastava caught behind in the 12th over. Shivakant hung on dangerously and could not capitalise on a couple of ‘lives’ as he went for a wild hook that gave C. Suresh a simple skier and P. Amarnath his first wicket. Debutant Prashant exhibited sound technique and cool temperament but perished after getting set. L. Balaji delivered a brilliant in-swinger that took the off-stump before the lunch break. Spirited effortIn the post-lunch session, Amarnath and Ganapathy put up a spirited effort and the home batsmen made their task easier by their lack of patience and application. Chawla, who played a responsible knock, remained unbeaten on 28, which included four boundaries. Balaji captured three wickets in the 57th over to bring an end to the Uttar Pradesh innings before tea. In reply, the Tamil Nadu openers — Abhinav Mukund and K.B. Arun Karthik — also found it difficult as they departed early. However, the experienced duo of S. Badrinath and Karthik steadied the ship by adding 37 runs in the unbroken third wicket.
