Probe into Indian student’s death

P. S. Suryanarayana

SINGAPORE: An Indian student has died in Adelaide, Australia, in circumstances yet to be fully established.

The South Australian Police informed the Indian mission in Sydney on Saturday that the student, believed to be Ganesh Sivaraman, had died of suffocation last Wednesday.

The mission was further informed that investigation was still on, with the police treating it as a case of apparent suicide. No further details were available until Sunday, and the identity of the student remained to be confirmed. It was not immediately possible to get a fuller police version through independent efforts. The number of Indian students in Australia has been rising in recent years, with Canberra catalysing the trend. And, responding to the “suggestions” that some of them were being “badly treated,” the authorities have pledged to address the issue. There have been cases of Indian students being attacked, especially those plying taxis on part-time basis to earn money to meet expenses.
