Acid attack case takes new turn

Staff Reporter

BANGALORE: Last month, Rakesh Raveendra, a radio operator with the Indian Air Force (IAF) in Jodhpur, was accused of hurling acid at Karthika Parameswaran, a final-year LLB student of Bishop Cotton Women’s Law College.

The accused, a native of Kerala, allegedly attacked Ms. Parameswaran in the front of her hostel when she was waiting for bus. Since then, he has been absconding.

Rakesh may be absconding, but his Orkut home page has been updated with attempts to tarnish the image of the victim. Photos and documents claiming that the two were married have been posted apart from sundry medical reports. This has attracted comments from the online community.

N. Manjunath, Assistant Commissioner of Police (Ulsoor Sub-Division), told The Hindu on Saturday that investigations revealed that the victim and the accused got married in a sub-registrar’s office in the city in June last.

“The victim, in her earlier statements, said that the accused attacked her when she turned down his marriage proposal. But now with the details found on the website, we questioned her and she admitted that they got married in the city in June last,” said another officer.

Meanwhile, the police have sought public help to trace the accused. The Ulsoor police said they had issued lookout notices across Kerala, Tamil Nadu, Andhra Pradesh, Maharashtra, Goa, Rajasthan, New Delhi and IAF centres.
