Enough security for Jayalalithaa: Karunanidhi

“The State government has assigned 84 personnel for security of

Ms. Jayalalithaa”

COIMBATORE: Chief Minister M. Karunanidhi on Sunday said that enough security was being provided to former Chief Minister and AIADMK leader Jayalalithaa. She was in the Z Plus category.

Referring to a letter containing a threat to Ms. Jayalalithaa and consequent voicing of concern over her security, Mr. Karunanidhi told reporters here that only a tight security cover helped in preventing untoward incidents during her visit to Pasumpon recently.

There was no assault attempted on Ms. Jayalalithaa, but her party cadre only threw stones at the police.

While the Union Home Ministry rules governing Z Plus security provided for a total of 54 personnel, including officials, the State government had assigned 84 personnel for security of Ms. Jayalalithaa.

Bullet-proof car

A bullet-proof car and two Deputy Superintendents of Police of her choice were part of the tight security being provided to the AIADMK leader. This was in contrast to only 43 provided to him, despite threat perceptions, when the AIADMK was in power from 2001 to 2006, he said. On the DMK’s preparedness for the next Lok Sabha elections, he said: “We are ready for everything.” On whether the PMK would re-establish ties with the DMK, he said: “Anything can happen.”

On the demand for re-considering the decision to bring Udumalpet under the new Tirupur district, the Chief Minister said it could not be re-considered as a Cauvery-like issue could crop up. Water from the Amaravati Dam, located in Udumalpet, was needed for Tirupur.

If Udumalpet was in Coimbatore district, sharing of water could become a problem. Nowadays, water-sharing was not only an inter-State issue, but also inter-district, he observed.
