Thrissur: Speaker K. Radhakrishnan has urged the Centre to devise State-specific loan schemes. He was addressing a meeting here on Sunday to inaugurate the renovated office of the Kerala State Backward Classes Development Corporation. “Most of the Central loan schemes are suitable only for implementation in North India. Rules for loan schemes should be revised considering the characteristics of each State.” He said that officials should ensure that the loans were used for the purposes cited and repaid on time. Presiding over the function, Electricity Minister A.K. Balan said that Rs.104 crore would be disbursed as loans to 21,000 members of backward and minority communities this financial year. “The SC/ST Welfare Department will be fully computerised. Within six months, loans may be applied online. Vidyasree education project and Bhavanasree housing are being implemented for the benefit of the backward classes. In all, 246 hostels for the backward classes were being renovated at a cost of Rs.10.5 crore,” he said. The government disbursed Rs.2.20 crore as loans to 234 members of the backward classes at the meeting.
