Awareness talk: U. Vasuki, State general secretary, AIDWA, speaking on ’Domestic Violence Prevention Laws’ in Tiruchi on Friday.

TIRUCHI: Sensitising women to the Prevention of Domestic Violence Act would go a long way in securing women’s rights and addressing the root cause of domestic violence, speakers at the panel discussion on ‘Protecting prevention of domestic violence acts’ on Friday.

Inaugurating the panel discussion, president of Women Advocates Association, Chellam Tamizharasan, said that legislature has provided quite a number of laws to protect women’s rights and onus was on the part of women to use it judicially.

Quoting instances of domestic violence in many parts of the country, Ms. Tamizharasan said the problem of violence was deep-rooted and urban women, surprisingly, were major victims, despite hailing from strong educational background. In rural areas, the social hierarchy has forced women to confine at home and conditioned them to address to the interests of their families.

On misuse of Prevention of Domestic Violence Act, state general secretary of All India Democratic Women Association (AIDWA) U. Vasuki said there has been an increase in the cases on exploitation of the Act for vested interests of women. The act, primarily, to protect the family from disintegrating has been misused to break the family bonds in many cases.

Representatives from around 15 organisations attended the panel discussion. Resolution to organise a signature campaign in support of protecting women welfare acts was adopted at the end of the panel discussion.

District President of AIDWA U. Nirmala Rani presided over. Secretary of Legal Assistance Association for Women B. Jansirani delivered valedictory address.

District Secretary of AIDWA S. Renuka spoke.
