TIRUCHI: A Caesarean section was performed at a primary health centre (PHC) for the first time in the district. A team of doctors at the PHC in Sirugambur near here operated upon S. Vijayakumari, who delivered a female baby on Wednesday.

Four obstetricians and gynaecologists and two aestheticians from various PHCs were pooled in to form a medical team for performing Caesarean sections, said the Deputy Director of Public Health Services, V. Veerapandiyan.

Four PHCs – Sirugambur, Uppiliyapuram, Vaiyyampatti and Thathaeingarpet – in the district have been equipped with operation theatres to conduct sterilisation surgeries. Caesarean sections would be done at any of these four PHCs henceforth.

It is the first pregnancy for Ms. Vijayakumari, a resident of Sirugambur, who was offered antenatal care by a village health nurse (VHN) of the PHC.

The VHN directed her to the health centre when her post dated pregnancy did not create any labour pain. The medical team headed by Subila performed the Caesarean section. “The medical team will be visiting all PHCs periodically to keep track of probable Caesarean cases. This will ensure that people across the district are benefited from the facility,” Dr. Veerapandiyan said.

Collector visited the beneficiary on Saturday and gave away Rs.3,000 as maternity medical assistance under Dr. Muthulakshmi Reddy Maternity Benefit Scheme.

Sterilisation surgeries that were earlier performed twice a month would be made available on all days.

The delivery cases in the district’s PHCs have witnessed a steep rise this year and reached nearly 800 cases a month, while the previous year recorded an average of 270 cases every month.
