CHICKBALLAPUR: Even as the police are struggling to arrest those who murdered progressive farmer Challa Krishnamurthy on Monday, another environmental activist from Gauribidanur in Chickballapur district has received a threat call. Sources in the Police Department told The Hindu on Saturday that D.A. Chowdappa, convenor of Pinakini Parisara Pragathi Parishat, had received an anonymous telephone call that he too would meet the same end as Krishnamurthy. After an armed gang attacked him on the outskirts of Gauribidanur, Krishnamurthy telephoned Mr. Chowdappa to take him to hospital. While Krishnamurthy was being taken to a hospital in Bangalore, Mr. Chowdappa, who was with him in the ambulance, received a threat call on his cellphone. Later, he brought the matter to the notice of the police. The call was traced to a coin telephone booth at Thondebavi, a few metres away from Hanumenahalli Gate where Krishnamurthy was attacked, the sources said. On the advice of the local police, Mr. Chowdappa apprised the Chickballapur Superintendent of Police, Ravindra Prasad, of the threat and sought protection. Though the senior official promised Mr. Chowdappa that he would be given a gunman, if needed, the police are yet to provided him security. Mr. Chowdappa has been fighting against sand extraction in Gauribidanur taluk for the past decade.
