Progressive Farmer Award presented to 34 persons

BANGALORE: Chief Minister B.S. Yeddyurappa on Saturday assured the University of Agricultural Sciences, Bangalore, of examining its request for providing financial assistance to construct a permanent exhibition centre to showcase modern farming technologies for farmers on a permanent basis.

Speaking after presenting the Progressive Farmer Award to 34 farmers including 17 women, at Krishi Mela, which is being held on the campus of the university here, the Chief Minister said that he would do his best to set up a permanent exhibition complex.

Referring to this, Vice-Chancellor of the university P.G. Chengappa appealed to the Chief Minister to help the university to set up a permanent exhibition centre. He also appealed to Mr. Yeddyurappa to provide an annual grant of Rs. 2 crore to organise Krishi Mela. The Chief Minister said that he would consider these demands.

Mr. Yeddyurappa said that his Government was considering a proposal for providing a subsidy of 50 per cent for purchasing equipment to extract bio-fuel.

Stating that the living standards of farmers had not improved even 60 years after Independence, he said there was a dire need to help them to overcome the agrarian crisis.

He asked the officials of Agriculture and allied departments to respond to the problems of farmers with greater commitment. He directed the officials and scientists at the two agricultural universities in the State to ensure that modern farming technologies reached the farmers without any delay.

“There should be a swift transfer of technologies from lab to land,” he said.

Mr. Yeddyurappa lauded the university for organising Krishi Mela successfully. Nearly 1.5 lakh people visited the mela on Saturday alone, taking the total number of visitors in the past three days to 3.25 lakh.

Congress MLA Krishna Byre Gowda urged the Chief Minister to take steps to bring about a positive change in the lives of farmers by ensuring remunerative prices for their produce. This could happen only through innovative thinking and concepts, he said.

Rural Development and Panchayat Raj Minister Shobha Karandlaje and Information Minister Katta Subramanya Naidu were present.
