Cataract surgeries at the speed of light

New techniques like stellaris micro incision have come as a boon to lakhs of patients

‘They can even take a head-bath immediately after the surgery’

HYDERABAD: A cataract surgery is now possible in just eight to 10 minutes.

The patient is immediately wheeled out of the operation theatre and can start reading newspaper or watch the favourite serial on television. No need to stay overnight in the hospital or take measures to prevent contact of eye with water. Welcome to the fast life of cataract surgeries.

Technology

Gone are the days of making huge 13-mm length incision, covering half of the eye. Thanks to technology, these days, just 1.3 mm length incision is made and the lens is inserted.

The quick rehabilitation and less time required to recover from the surgical wound has made cataract surgeries, these days, quite mundane in twin cities.

Cataract surgery technique has been honed to such a level in twin cities that patients are no longer treated as inpatients.

Top city ophthalmologists point out that technology enables them to guarantee the patient with reduced incidence of infections, superior vision quality and the promise of no spectacles.

“I straightaway ask my patients to take up their regular duties. They can even take a head-bath immediately after the surgery. Earlier, we used to stitch the eye after incision, but technology has made our life easy. We don’t stitch the eye anymore,” says noted Ophthalmologist Dr. K.P. Reddy.

Cataract is age and diabetic related ailment in which lens of eye gets clouded, thus obstructing vision.

The vision recovery after the surgery has become instantaneous.

“There are patients who drove back home after cataract surgery. Technology has made it possible,” says eye specialist from Government Sarojini Devi Hospital Dr. K. Kulasekhar.

“New techniques like stellaris micro incision have come as a boon for lakhs of patients. By the age of 40, almost everyone these days develop cataract.

In future too, curing this ailment will become a lot easier,” says Dr. Reddy.
