Opportune moment: A little girl waits for her turn to perform at the Children’s Day celebrations organised on Friday. CHENNAI: Toppers of various competitions held in connection with the Children’s Day were awarded prizes at a function organised by School Education Department at Santhome Higher Secondary School on Friday. School Education Minister Thangam Thennarasu distributed the prizes to nearly 40 students from several city schools who won in essay, oratorical and painting competitions. The Minister highlighted former Prime Minister Jawaharlal Nehru’s role in the development of the country and his love for children. Pointing out that nearly 99 per cent of the children in the age group of six to 14 years go to schools in the State, he said that the government has taken measures to ensure education to all and abolish corporal punishment. Child-centric approachWith the child-centric approach of the present education system, children now have become self-confident and acknowledge the better classroom environment, he said. The Minister took salute of the parade presented by student teams from various schools. Commending the efforts of the children, he said that they showcased their talents in various events and spread social messages through their performance. He assured the children that the School Education Department and the teachers would guide them in the path of development. Director of Matriculation Schools P. Mani spoke on the immense contribution of Jawaharlal Nehru towards the progress of science and technology in the country. Colourful performance by students depicting themes of national integrity and patriotism marked the Children’s Day celebrations.
