Faith between doctor and patient essential, says Kamath

MAKING A POINT: Pro-Chancellor of Manipal University H.S. Ballal speaking at a function organised for releasing the book ‘Peeping inside the body’ in Manipal on Friday.

Manipal: Director of Manipal Institute of Communication M.V. Kamath said on Friday that the faith between a doctor and a patient played a vital role in tackling health problems.

He was speaking after releasing the book “Peeping inside the body”, written by H.S. Ballal and P.D. Gupta, here.

Mr. Kamath said that a few decades ago, there was less number of testing machines. It was faith on the doctors which played an important role in curing the diseases. “Today, there are all kinds of tests. The amount of technology available is frightening,” he said.

Suggesting to the doctors and medical students to read the book “The lost art of healing: practicing compassion in medicine”, written by physician and Nobel Peace Award winner Bernard Lown, Mr. Kamath said that this technical advancement might terminate the traditional relation between a doctor and a patient. “Can a common man undergo so many tests that would cost him a fortune?” he asked. Vice Chancellor of Manipal Unviersity Rajasekharan Warrier said that books on health-related topics were essential to create awareness about healthcare.

Pro-Chancellor of Manipal University and one of the authors of the book Dr. H.S. welcomed the gathering. K.M. Cariappa proposed a vote of thanks.

Dr. P.D. Gupta, co-author of the book, and registrar (international programmes) Vinod Bhat were present.
