Making their day memorable

Organisations made sure that young ones had a blast this year

All smiles: Children participate enthusiastically in a story telling session at the Adyar Poonga on Friday.

Chennai: From conducting a number of fun-filled activities to opening children-friendly initiatives, various organisations made sure young ones had a blast this Children’s Day.

Announce a drawing competition and children will queue up at any event. The Power Grid Corporation of India organised a state-level painting competition in Anna University. With themes like ‘Walk don’t run… your engine,’ ‘Energy conservation for the future’ and ‘To live in it – clean it up,’ participants got another platform to show their creativity.

Around 125 students of six corporation and four government-aided schools had a whale of a time in events such as story telling at the Adyar Poonga, organised by Pitchandikulam Forest Consultants.

It was a day of joy and sharing for around 40 children from Siragu Montessori in Avadi and some students of PSBB Schools. Children from the Montessori were treated to two hours of fun by The Accord Metropolitan staff.

Children of Sevalaya, a charitable trust, visited the Government Hospital in Thiruvallur, where they entertained patients with songs, stories, skits, and distributed fruits and biscuits.

A talent hunt competition for 600 hearing impaired children was conducted at The Little Flower Convent by Rotary Club of Madras Southwest. Participants showcased talents in singing, dancing, fancy dress, cooking, fruit and vegetable carving and hair styling.

CII in partnership with UNICEF, The Hindu and AMM Foundation conducted a campaign at Corporation Higher Secondary School, New Washermanpet to spread awareness on sanitation.

‘Taare Zameen Par’ - a sit and draw competition for differently-abled children – was organised by Round Table Area - II, 39, 30 and 181 and Ladies Circle India in association with Oxford Bookstore Chennai. State Bank of Travancore took the occasion to extend financial aid to two needy students of Ambattur Municipal School, Korattur.

Frontier Lifeline and the Dr. K.M. Cherian Heart Foundation in collaboration with Madras Anchorage Round Table 100 initiated the ‘Heart 2 Heart’ campaign, where a free heart care camp was conducted for children at Frontier Lifeline Hospital in Mogappair.

Here’s a new stop to entertain and educate your kids. Tamil Nadu Veterinary and Animal Sciences University inaugurated the ‘Animal Science Park’ in the Madhavaram campus.

Tamil Nadu Health Development Association organised a human chain from Memorial Hall, Opp. Government Hospital to Kuralagam. Their demand was to the ministry of health to restart production in three public sector vaccine units, and the State Government to restore the old method of giving vaccine at the doorstep.

If private organisation could go all out to celebrate Children’s Day how can schools be far behind? Padma Seshadri Bala Bhavan Senior Secondary School opened their ‘Media Club,’ where it hopes to trigger interest in students about the impact of media on society.

SRM Nightingale Matriculation Higher Secondary School in West Mambalam also celebrated the day with colourful programmes and inspiring speeches.

The students’ team from Chua Chu Kang Secondary School, Singapore joined the party at SBOA Matriculation Higher Secondary School, Anna Nagar Western Extension. The manuscript class magazines numbering 92 from classes III to XII were released.

Around 146 teachers from Everwin Matriculation Higher Secondary School, Kolathur presented poikkal kuthirai, fashion show and other events.

Students of N.S.N. Matriculation Higher Secondary School sponsored more than 250 less fortunate children on a trip to MGM, providing them lunch and snacks and gifting them school bags and stationery.

The school also donated Rs.1.5 lakh to The Banyan, Rs. 50,000 to Ray of Light Foundation, Rs. 25,000 to Vishvadaan Educational and Charitable Trust and Rs. 25,000 to Larencce Charitable Trust.

This probably is the perfect gift for bookworms. Landmark played host to the launch of two children picture books – ‘Crocodile Tears’ and ‘Dosas’ by Sandhya Rao. Yog Japee and Theatre Y added to the evening’s excitement by bringing the characters alive.

Now, if you are looking to participate in more Children’s Day related events then Madras Spice Round Table 159 has a series of competitions lined up till November 20 to celebrating the RTI Week.

The Alliance Francaise of Madras has opened its exhibition of photographs of children, which will be on display till November 29.

On Saturday, Nalanda Way children’s music band along with Shivamani will perform at Lady Andal School, Harrington Road at 7 p.m. These children were rescued from child labour or abuse.
