Imaginative: Students at the contest organised by the Department of Posts in Chennai on Friday.

Chennai: The campus of Maharishi Vidya Mandir Higher Secondary School in Chetpet was probably one of the most happening places to be in on Friday. Both the assembly ground and the rooftop were abuzz with activity.

While primary school children added colour to the atmosphere by enacting various roles through the fancy dress competition, students from around 19 schools in the city were putting in their best creativity on paper for the painting competition.

The Department of Posts organised an on-the-spot ‘Design a Stamp’ contest for students, with the school playing host to all the participants from Chennai City North division.

‘Preservation of environment’ and ‘Education for all’ – the two themes for classes V to VIII – had some of the liveliest of paintings among the other themes. Students played with their imagination to draw a creative concept, give a title and to add a splash of colours. M. Gowshik of Sindhi Model Senior Secondary School was among the first to submit his pencil sketch, leaving behind the message ‘Education for the poor is more important than the rich’.

A boy helping an elderly man cross the road, two images of planet Earths – one smiling and one crying and many other day-to-day examples dominated.

Students up to classes IV could choose among the three themes – ‘My birthday party,’ ‘My favourite sport,’ ‘My favourite animal,’ whereas those in classes IX to XII had to choose between ‘Care for disabled and old’ and ‘Avoid child labour.’

Three best entries in all the three categories would be selected for the regional level and be awarded prizes. The first prize among all the categories will be sent to the directorate for participation in the national contest. And finally the winning entry at the national level is likely to be chosen for a commemorative postage stamp and first day cover.
