THIRUVANANTHAPURAM: The Total Physical Fitness Programme (TPFP), the ambitious project of the Kerala State Sports Council, was inaugurated with much fanfare here on Friday. The first phase of the project which aims to assess the physical fitness of over 32 lakh students studying in 4,300 schools across the State will get completed during the second week of December. Students will be tested on five counts and their achievements recorded so as to identify the latent talent in them. Lauds KSSCAt the State-level inaugural function, the Education Minister, M.A. Baby recorded the performance of five students of the host St. Mary’s Higher Secondary School. Speaking later, the Minister lauded the KSSC for coming up with such an innovative project and getting it off the blocks quite significantly on the birth anniversary of Independent India’s first Prime Minister, Jawaharlal Nehru. The Sports Minister, M. Vijayakumar, in his presidential address, pointed out that the programme would go a long way in not only identifying talent but also in propagating of a healthy life style among all sections of the people. Though initially, only students in classes fifth to ninth standards were being tested this year, the actual gains would be more next year when it would extended up to the 12th standard, he said. The KSSC secretary, G. Kishore presented the project report. The Sports secretary, Teekaram Meena welcomed the gathering which was also attended by V. Sivankutty, MLA, and Joy Sebastian, Executive Director, Sports Authority of India. Besides the function at the St. Mary’s HSS, similar functions were also held in all the districts across the State to mark the commencement of the campaign.
