VICTORIOUS: The Alappuzha team which triumphed in the Kerala State table tennis championship at Alappuzha on Friday. ALAPPUZHA: After six years of hard work, it was party time at the Alappuzha YMCA Table Tennis Academy on Friday evening. Alappuzha emerged as Kerala’s new table tennis capital after winning nine of the 10 inter-district team titles in the State table tennis championship at the YMCA here. “We are winning the men’s title for the first time,” said the triumphant coach M. R. Rajeev, who along with Bobby Joseph play a major part in the academy’s success. The district, with Maria Rony and Sikha Jacob leading the charge, was taking the women’s trophy after a gap of nearly 15 years. The 11-year-old Maria also upset State champion Anju K. Thomas in the women’s team decider to pull off a memorable victory for the district. Alappuzha had finished with just four team titles, while Thiruvananthapuram, for years the State’s table tennis capital, went home with five last year. The team from the Capital ended with just one this time. K. C.Venugopal, MLA, gave away the prizes. The results (team championship finals): Men: Alappuzha bt Thiruvananthapuram 3-2 (M. R. Rajeev lost to P. Adarsh 7-11, 7-11, 11-8, 9-11; Vishnu Narayan bt R. Rajesh 7-11, 11-7, 11-9, 11-8; S. Sundar bt Jais Stephen 11-13, 11-9, 8-11, 11-6, 11-7; Vishnu Narayan lost to P. Adarsh 7-11, 11-7, 9-11, 6-11; M. R. Rajeev bt R. Rajesh 11-5, 11-7, 10-12, 11-8). Third place: Ernakulam. Junior boys: Alappuzha bt Thiruvananthapuram 3-0 (S. Sundar bt Harikrishnan 14-12, 12-14, 11-8, 11-8; Vishnu Narayan bt V. P. Arjun 11-9, 11-4, 11-8; S. Sundar / Vishnu Narayan bt Harikrishnan / S. Arjun 12-10, 11-7, 9-11, 11-9). Third place: Wynad. Cadet boys: Alappuzha bt Ernakulam 3-0 (Rohit Binu Mathew bt Mishal Dilawar 11-6, 11-5, 11-6; Anas Irshad bt Nitin Narayan 12-10, 11-13, 11-8, 11-4; Rohit Binu Mathew / Anas Irshad bt Mishal Dilawar/Nitin Narayan 11-6, 11-9, 11-2). Third place: Palakkad. Women: Alappuzha bt Thiruvananthapuram 3-2 (Maria Rony bt Aparna D. Nair 11-9, 11-3, 9-11, 11-9; Sikha Jacob lost to Anju K.
