Mohd. Sporting beats Vasco

KOLKATA: Mohammedan Sporting beat Vasco SC by a solitary goal here in an eighth round match of the I-League football at the Salt Lake Stadium on Friday.

Sporting, which fell into the relegation zone due to some bad results in the previous rounds, bettered its position with this win. The home side now tallies nine points from eight matches, while Vasco continues to remain at the bottom with just two points.

Vasco started well and earned chances at will in the first-half. But the tentativeness of its attackers and an alert Mohammedan Sporting goalkeeper, Tharangachan, saw that none of the visitor’s attacks could mature into a goal. For Vasco, Agnelo D’souza, Abhishek Yadav and Elvino Fernandez missed close opportunities.

Sporting stung back in the second session as Vasco failed to repeat the performance it showed in the first session. The winning goal came in the 86th minute when substitute Vimal Pariyar nodded home an assist from Sovan Chakraborty. — Principal Correspondent
