KOLLAM: P. Ramabhadran, president of the Kerala Dalit Front (KDF), has said that all development programmes for the Scheduled Communities are at a standstill. He has attributed this to the alleged apathy on the part of Minister for the Welfare of Scheduled Communities A.K. Balan. At a press conference here on Friday, Mr. Ramabhadran said that the Minister seemed to be more interested in the electricity portfolio. The Scheduled Communities Development Department had been totally ignored. It was because of this that those in the Kollam Pre-Matric Hostel were living in pathetic conditions. The condition of most of the hostels for students from the Scheduled Communities was not different. But moves were on to make officers the scapegoats. It was unkind of the DYFI-SFI activists to gherao the Tribal Development Officer at Punalur, a woman, for something that happened at the at Kollam. They should have registered their protest against the Minister, he said.
