Aim is to popularise energy and environment conservation ‘Portal will be updated continuously’ KOLLAM: The Malayalam portal www.urjasamrakshanam.org that was formally formally launched on November 1 is turning into a big draw. It is the first Malayalam portal that allows the user to get all information through the net in Malayalam. The portal is an initiative of the Kollam-based Green Energy Trust (GET). The portal boasts of people like Padmabooshan N.S. Ramaswamy, V.K. Damodaran, P.O.J. Lebba, R.V.G. Menon, S. Ratnakumar and V.K. Adarsh, as the architects behind the design. All of them are well known for their services in promoting energy and environment conservation. According to Mr. Ratnakumar, the administrator of the portal, urjasamrakshanam.org is an example that a free software-based web portal is capable of handling multi-faceted functions of a local language portal. Popularising energy and environment conservation through public participation for mitigating the energy crisis is another main aim of the portal. The technology management aspect of the portal is provided by the Society for Promotion of Alternative Computing and Employment, a registered society promoted by the Kerala State IT Mission. The portal makes use of 2.0 services like user interactive pages and facility for writing comments. The user can register through user name and password and then log in. Mr. Ratnakumar said that the portal is dynamic in nature and will be updated continuously. The portal has also provided the solution to the deficiency that users are not getting Malayalam based contents through the internet.
