Volleyball tournament in Birur from January 2

CHIKMAGALUR: A national-level volleyball championship for boys and girls aged below 14 will be held at Birur in the district from January 2 to 6. Deputy Commissioner R. Narayanaswamy, who presided over a preparatory meeting in Birur on Friday, said 25 teams from various parts of the country were expected to participate in the tournament.

Stating that the district administration, Education Department and the Kannada Sangha of Birur were organising the tournament, he instructed the officials to ensure that there were no technical problems.

He said a handbook on the history of the game and a brief introduction on well-known volleyball players from the district would be released during the tournament. Various committees for the conduct of the tournament had been formed.

K.B. Mallikarjuna, former MLA and honorary president of the Kannada Sangha, and Puttananjaiah, Deputy Director of Physical Education Department, spoke.
