Tirupur: A total of 28 residents of Velliyangadu, Arul Nagar and Vallalar Nagar courted arrest on Thursday after they agitated against the indiscriminate dumping of solid wastes and letting out of waste water by the Corporation administration at their localities.

The dwellers were held by the police when they stopped the Corporation’s truck carrying domestic wastes from entering their hamlets in the morning.

Residents complained that foul smell emanating from the wastes that were being dumped carelessly in pits situated in the areas, had become unbearable.

While the dumping of solid wastes had been attracting stay dogs, discharge of waste water was polluting land as well as becoming a perfect breeding ground for mosquitoes.

“We have resorted to agitation only after all our pleas to stop the desultory offloading of wastes in thickly populated areas had gone unaddressed,” they said. According to them, stringent action should be taken against the Corporation authorities for not properly following the guidelines set by the Union Ministry of Environment and Forests pertaining to safe disposal of wastes.
