NEW DELHI: Prakash Amritraj defeated qualifier Izak Van Der Merwe of South Africa 6-7(4), 6-4, 7-6(4) in the first round of the $50,000 ATP Challenger tennis tournament at Champaign, Illionois, US. Somdev Dev Varman lost in the first round of the qualifying event to Lester Cook of the US 3-6, 4-6. However, in doubles, Somdev in partnership with Izak Van Der Merwe made the quarterfinals with a 6-1, 3-6, 10-8 victory over lucky-losers G. D. Jones of New Zealand and Connor Roth of the US. The Indo-South African pair had won two rounds in the qualifying event, including a 6-3, 6-2 victory over Harsh Mankad and Ashutosh Singh in the final round. Making the main draw as lucky-losers, Harsh and Ashutosh went down fighting 6-7(6), 7-6(6), 6-10 to Brian Battistone and Dann Battistone of the US in the pre-quarterfinals.
