All Saints-Hyderabad wins The Hindu Young World Quiz

Winners of The Hindu Young World Quiz-2008 all-india final, A. Krishna Akhil and P. Rohan Naidu of the All Saints High School, Gunfoundry, Hyderabad, with the trophies, in Visakhapatnam on Thursday.

VISAKHAPATNAM: The team of A. Krishna Akil and R. Rohan Naidu from All Saints High School, Hyderabad, emerged winners at the grand national final of the ninth edition of the annual multi-city quiz for school children — The Hindu Young World Quiz — held here on Thursday.

The All Saints team emerged winner practically in the third round itself. The duo scored 60 points in one go in the multimedia mix round, surging ahead of the nearest rival Mangalore by a clear 50 points.

While the first runner-up prize was bagged by V.K. Shreya and Dhritish Karanth of Little Rocks Indian High School, Mangalore, P. Swetha and G. Narendhar of St. Patrick Matric High School, Puducherry, took the second runner-up spot.

The team comprising of Joel Oommen and Sachin R. Das of Auxillium Navajyothi Higher Secondary School-Kozhikode bagged the fourth prize, A.S. Safeer Bawa-Ravikrishnan Rajeev of Bhavan’s Adarsha Vidyalaya-Kochi and R. Srimukundan-S. Siddharth of Mahatma Montessori Matriculation High School, Madurai, took the fifth and sixth spots respectively.

Chairman and Managing Director of Rashtriya Ispat Nigam Ltd. (Visakhapatnam Steel Plant) P.K. Bishnoi, gave away the prizes to the winners.

After two high-voltage semi-final rounds, six teams out of 13 made it to the grand final. Defending national champions and this year’s regional finalist from Visakhapatnam, De Paul School, was edged out in the second semi-final round.

The other teams that made it to the national semi-final stage were Christ Nagar, Thiruvananthapuram, V.P. Siddhartha Public School, Vijayawada, Vidya Niketan MHSS, Coimbatore, R.S. Krishnan Higher Secondary School, Trichy, Bala Vidya Mandir, Chennai, National Public School, Bangalore and De Paul, Visakhapatnam.

In the morning session, the regional finals for Visakhapatnam was conducted and the winners joined the other 12 regional finalists from various regions for the big battle of minds in the afternoon, for the national finals. The day-long quiz session was interspersed with laser shows and commercials, which gelled well with the young minds.

The event was conducted by Quizwalahs, and The Hindu’s in-house quizzer V.V. Ramanan was the quizmaster. The title sponsor of the event was Extramarks.com.

The associate sponsors were D.C. Books and Mango, Pepsico Cheetos, Kissan Amaze Brainfood and Visakhapatnam Steel Plant. Cycle Brand Agarbathi, Encyclopaedia Britannica, Reynolds, State Bank of Travancore, Penguin Books, Firefox Bikes and Lotte were the national sponsors. Dabur Real Fruit Juice was the official drink.
