HELPING MEDICAL research: Former AIADMK Minister S.R. Radha, right, handing over a letter donating his wife Rukmini’s body in Thanjavur on Thursday.

THANJAVUR: The body of Rukmini (57), wife of former AIADMK Minister S. R. Radha, who died on Wednesday, was handed over to the anatomy department of Thanjavur Medical College here on Thursday as per her wish.

Rukmini registered with the Medical College for donation of her body in 2007. Rukmini signed an affidavit in this regard when she was in good health.

Mr. S. R. Radha, his sons and daughters, son-in-law and Aranthangi Judicial Magistrate L. S. Sathiamoorthy and former AIADMK minister Alagu Thirunavukarasu were present when the body was handed over.

T. Sivakami, Professor of Anatomy, Dr.Muthukumaran, Dean (in-charge) and C. Gunasekaran, Resident Medical Officer, received the body.

Dr. Sivakami told The Hindu that 25 persons had registered this year for donating the body after death.

From 2,000 onwards, those who register for donating their bodies is on the increase.

“Normally we keep a body for more than one year for the students,” Dr. Sivakami said.

Mr. Radha had also registered to donate his body, she said.

Mr. Radha said that the idea struck him when Salem Dental college was started. He was an MLC and the then Health Minister H. V. Hande said that bodies would be required for starting medical colleges.

“At that time, I said I could donate my body or that of my wife. Later, we also brought in some changes in the law governing donation of body. It was only with the consent of sons and daughters that one could donate his body. Following efforts by Dr. Hande, the law was changed and willingness of the donor was enough to donate bodies,” Mr. Radha said.
